Workshops at the Dorothy Heathcote Now Conference, Aberdeen 5th – 8th October, 2023

Description
  • Dates: Saturday and Sunday of the conference (October 7th and 8th, 2023).
  • Presenters: Richard Kieran, Lisa Hinton, and Tim Taylor.
    • Presenter Backgrounds:
    • Richard and Lisa work at Woodrow First School in Redditch, where they use Mantle of the Expert from Nursery to Year 4.
    • Tim is an international teacher and coach in Mantle of the Expert, and author of ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Mantle of the Expert’ [2016] and ‘Try This… Unlocking Learning with Imagination’ [2023].

Workshop Content:

  • The workshops will focus on the use of conventions of dramatic action in Mantle of the Expert.
  • They will explore in detail a Mantle of the Expert context based on Lewis Carroll's poem, Jabberwocky, which was used at Woodrow School.
  • Attendees will learn how these conventions were incorporated into the context and how they were used to develop learning.
  • Richard and Lisa will share planning materials and photographs of student work.
  • Practical aspects of running Mantle of the Expert in a mainstream school will be discussed, including assessment, timetables, planning, and behaviour management.

Workshop Style:

  • The workshops will be both discussion-based and practical/exploratory.
  • Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations on how to use the conventions to create engaging and meaningful sequences of learning.
