This online course will provide an introduction to Dorothy Heathcote’s Mantle of the Expert system, a way of teaching the curriculum through drama.

Over ten weeks, participants will learn about key aspects of the system, including: planning; meeting curriculum targets; creating teaching materials; “sign,” “context” and “frame”; working through tasks; “client,” “commission” and “publication”; and teacher-as-facilitator.

The course will also support teachers in developing their own Mantle projects which they can try out and implement in schools.

The course is aimed at teachers at different levels of education, both primary and secondary. It will appeal to people who are new to Mantle, as well as people with some experience in using drama in the classroom.

The aims of the course are:

- to explore the philosophical and pedagogical principles behind the Mantle system

- to build participants’ understanding of the different aspects of the Mantle system, and their confidence in its practical application in educational contexts

- to support teachers in their own professional development, and in planning and implementing schemes of work in the classroom

The course is led by Dr. David Allen, Artistic Director of Midland Actors Theatre, UK (MAT), and there will be input by other drama practitioners and specialists. There will also be guided support through videos, reading materials, etc.

David has published numerous articles and books on theatre and drama, including "Stanislavski for Beginners" and "Performing Chekhov." He knew Dorothy Heathcote personally, and she advised and supported him in developing Mantle projects for schools.

David has also trained teachers in schools in Mantle, at both primary and secondary levels. He runs the Facebook group The Commission Model of Teaching and the website www.mantlenetwork.com. He was the convenor in 2021 of the international Dorothy Heathcote Now conference. Midland Actors Theatre is currently lead partner on two Erasmus Plus projects, on Rolling Role and the Commission Model; and the company was also lead partner on a previous Erasmus Plus project on the Mantle system.

Live online sessions will take place on all Sundays starting from 4 September 2022. There will be "look back breaks" on 24 October and 13 November. End date of the course will be 20 November.

All live sessions will take place from 3pm to 5pm (India Time) on all Sundays. (10.30am - 12.30pm UK time)

DOROTHY HEATHCOTE (1926-2011) was a pioneer in the development of drama methods in teaching. She is perhaps best known for the “Mantle of the Expert” system, an enquiry method of teaching, in which children are asked to think of themselves as a fictional “expert team” of some kind. They might be people running a museum, for example, or a travel agency, etc. They carry out a variety of tasks, to complete a "commission" from a fictional "client." The choice of team, and the different tasks, are designed by the teacher to meet curriculum targets.
