Workshop – Primary Rocks Live
Mantle of the Expert - creating stories for learning
This workshop will be an introduction to Mantle of the Expert, an approach to teaching and learning that utilises the learning potential of stories and the imagination of students. The teacher plans a context - people, location and time - to capture the interests of the children and frame the curriculum within a meaningful narrative. Once in the classroom, the teacher collaborates with the students to develop an ongoing story that creates meaning and purpose to learning activities and develops a commitment to curriculum study. The term ‘expert’ is a paradox because children don’t know what they don’t know, but within a story - much like when children play - they can take on the role of experts ‘as if’ they are the ones with responsibility and the power to decide. Stepping in and stepping out of this imaginary role creates a space where the students can explore, reflect, and enjoy being in a narrative with tension and purpose.
