2013 Dates for the West Midlands Mantle of the Expert Network

Luke Abbott: Responding to Children’s Needs 

9-10 February, Woodrow First School, Redditch

At this 2-day event, Luke will look at how we can adapt and respond to the needs of children, as we work in Mantle of the Expert. Over the course of the weekend, delegates will be able to observe Luke working with a group of children from Woodrow School.

In over thirty years of practice, Luke Abbott has taught in hundreds of schools all over the UK and abroad. He is recognised internationally as a leading practitioner and advocate of the Mantle of the Expert system.

Iona Towler-Evans & David Allen: Drama and History

27 April, Newman University College, Genners Lane, Birmingham B32 3NT

This one-day event will look at ways to empower children, and encourage independent learning, in teaching about local history. It will focus on Dorothy Heathcote’s ‘commission’ model – where children respond to a ‘commission’ sent to them by an organisation in the community. The day is led by Iona Towler-Evans and David Allen, who will present examples of projects they have undertaken in both primary and secondary schools (including mainstream, ‘Gifted and Talented’ and disaffected children).

Ideal for primary teachers at KS2; English/ History/Drama teachers at KS3; and special needs teachers.

Eileen Pennington: Strategies for Learning

15-16 June, Newman University College, Genners Lane, Birmingham B32 3NT

At this 2-day event, Eileen will look at strategies that can facilitate learning through Mantle of the Expert. She will focus, in particular, on Dorothy Heathcote’s ‘33 conventions.’

Eileen Pennington trained with Dorothy Heathcote. For many years, she was part of the Northumberland Drama Team, working in Drama in Education, local theatre and youth theatre, and inservice training. She has also worked extensively with teachers in Poland, Hungary and Greece.

Membership of the Network
One year’s membership of the network costs just £75 for a school/institution, and £30 per year for individuals (£20 for students).
