News on Masters Degree in Mantle of the Expert

In collaboration with Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln, mantleoftheexpert.com has created a course for experienced practising teachers to study mantle of the expert to Masters Level. Titled: ‘MA Degree route to dramatic arts inquiry pedagogy (also known as Mantle of the Expert)’ the course will be directed and lead by Luke Abbott supported by a team of highly trained practising tutors and skilled users of mantle of the expert.

The programme will include working with Dr Dorothy Heathcote, who will act as mentor and executive evaluator, and tutors from the national mantle of the expert training team: including, Luke Abbott, Tim Taylor, and Iona Towler Evans.

From autumn 2009 we will be running the first training course for those colleagues who are at the advanced level of their mantle of the expert practice enabling them to become trainers themselves in their own regions and other places. For more details on these courses please visit mantle of the expert at Ringsfield Hall.
Dr Harriet Marland will be our contact in the first instance with Bishop Grosseteste and the organisation/administration of awards.

Note: From 2009-2011 award bearing courses for teachers heading for M level accreditation have been given over 90% subsidy by the government so that teachers can reach M level at reduced costs. For the next 2 years it will be possible for colleagues to enrol for PGCerts for around £50 per module in addition to course costs. Similarly the full MA route will be significantly cheaper in the next 2 years as the award will also attract subsidies.
(After 2011 the costs to candidates are expected to rise to nearer £500 per module as well as course fees etc. making the full cost of an MA around £3,000+ excluding course fees.)

For those wishing to obtain accreditations to M level the opportunity to do so with the financial advantages mentioned above cannot be guaranteed after 2011. Furthermore APL (Assessment of Prior Learning) can apply to those colleagues who have recent and relevant M credits, making the accreditation routes even more attractive since credits can be awarded for such APL if the learning accrued was in the remit of advancing practices in learning and teaching, drama for learning or specifically Mantle of the expert.

Structure and requirements for routes
Currently we will only be able to accredit colleagues who have signed up on the advanced/trainer programme as from December 2009 – May 2010.
NB: We are in dialogue with Bishop Grosseteste as to how we can create accredited routes beyond the ‘advanced/trainer’ programme. Details will be available through mantleoftheexpert.com as details emerge.

The first will be a portfolio closely linked to a reflective account of personal learning through the mantle of the expert course informed by further reading to illuminate issues. The recording of critical incidents, commentary on tools and academic texts used and suggested by course leaders will also form part of the reflective process.
