Forthcoming articles on recent Mantle of the Expert programmes
This term you will find two articles highlighting the use of Mantle of the Expert in educational journals/magazines.
In the first article, published in the November issue of Secondary English Magazine, Iona Towler-Evans outlines how, in collaboration with a graduate trainee teacher, she adapted Luke Abbott’s scheme on the Marie Celeste for a year 8 class. The teacher’s focus was on how a challenging class in The West Midlands could use the Mantle of the Expert approach to access pre 20th century literature.
In the second article, published in Gifted & Talented Journal, David Allen & Iona Towler-Evans ask, “How can we encourage the development of thinking skills in ‘Gifted and Talented’ pupils?” By using a programme, planned in collaboration with Dorothy Heathcote, Iona and David examine how children’s thinking skills can be encouraged through Mantle of the Expert - helping children to focus on ‘how they learn’ rather than ‘what they learn’
David Allen (The Midland Actors Theatre) and Iona Towler-Evans will both be running sessions on the Mantle of the Expert approach at the forthcoming MoE.1 Conference at Aston Business Centre, January 21st 2008, supported by Gillian Adamson (MAT) and Sam Law (NQT).
