Conference – 3rd February 2012: Does the Curriculum have a Future?
With a wide-ranging review of the national curriculum in full flow and rapid (possibly irreversible) change happening across the whole education system there has never been a more pertinent time to ask: Does the curriculum have a future?
This day-long inquiry conference, suitable for school leaders, teachers, and advisers, will be an exciting opportunity to learn about the current state of the government’s review and the possible shape and scope of the new curriculum. It will also provide a valuable forum for professional discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the new curriculum and school restructuring.
Guest speakers:
Prof. Mary James - President of the British Educational Research Association and Associate Director of Research at Cambridge University, is a member of the National Curriculum Review Expert Panel and has been at the heart of the process of curriculum review this year.
Mike Davies – Retired Headteacher, International consultant, and past member of the Building Schools for the Future architectural team, is one of the most experienced and widely respected headteachers of a generation who came into teaching in the years following the Plowden Report. Headteacher of Bishop’s Park High School, “arguably the most important single educational innovation at secondary school level the United Kingdom has seen for 20 years” Mike has a unique and highly perceptive view on human-scale education.
Luke Abbott - International teacher/consultant and director of mantleoftheexpert.com, is one of the country’s most talented and challenging teachers. A student of the renowned educationist, Dorothy Heathcote, Luke has over 40 years experience working across the whole of the education system both in the UK and abroad. His recent foreign projects have included, China, New Zealand and Palestine. Luke’s view is the curriculum (whatever the shape of the statutory elements) must be meaningful, relevant, and pertinent to students growing up in a world of rapid technological, economic and political change.
