Building on the success of the Cambridgeshire LA The Mantle of the Expert curriculum development project, CAS is now able to offer a CPD package that will support the development of the approach in your school.
What is The Mantle of the Expert?
•   The Mantle of the Expert is an approach to teaching and learning developed by drama educationalist Dorothy Heathcote.
•   It is an approach to education rooted in drama, enquiry and imagination in which children and teachers work together to create an imaginary community within which they function as if they were experts in a particular field.
•   Children’s presumed expertise develops into a genuine expertise in certain areas of learning (some of them pre-planned by the teacher) and their understanding of certain concepts (again, planned by the teacher) is greatly enhanced.
•   Through The Mantle of the Expert, children can encounter many aspects of the school curriculum enabling genuinely meaningful cross-curricular learning to take place.
In short, The Mantle of the Expert is a particularly rich pedagogy that will help schools develop learning links and personalise the curriculum.
What will the CPD package consist of?
The CPD package will require a minimum of 4 schools working together as a cluster. The package of support will last for the duration of 2 terms and will consist of combinations of the following aspects:
•   A briefing for one or more Senior Managers
•   One training day for all participating teachers led by an experienced Mantle of the Expert trainer;
•   Paired visits i.e. two school based training days for a pair of teachers to work alongside a pair of teachers from another school and a Mantle of the Expert trainer. One day in school and one day at a partner school;
•   One additional support visit from a LA coach for each school
•   A school based twilight network meeting for all teachers, at a mid point in the project;
•   End of project half day show case meeting for all participating schools.
