Resources and notes for moe training in Palestine, Aug 2010

This project has been organised by Dr. Nader Wahbeh Senior researcher for Qattan Foundation in partnership with the welfare association of Palestine.

The project is for kindergarten teachers (Age 4-7) working in different schools in West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem and area ’48.

The aim of this project is for the professional development of the teachers to plan more engaging, purposeful and meaningful learning opportunities that incorporate imaginary contexts and to create, use and develop resources that will help children to become more active and engaged learners.

The project, starting in March 2010, is for one year. There is a preparation phase in the Spring, followed by extensive summer courses in drama, story-telling, multi-media animation, play for learning and mantle of the expert. The project continues between September 2010 and May 2011 when the teachers will develop their skills and understanding in-school through practice and reflection.

We hope from the project that the teachers will develop more creative and flexible curriculum for the own schools. During the final stage of the project the teachers will meet as a whole group to reflect on the project and learn from each other’s work and experiences. Qattan will loan the project teachers resources and video cameras to record their own classroom practice. At the end of the project there will be a research paper with contributions from all the project teachers containing their reflections on the steps they made and outcomes for children. Which will be presented at the Qattan bi-annual conference and published in the foundations journal, Rua.

so far the work shop is very interesting and useful for me and my children it hits lots of points in my mind and answered many questions about how to make all children be envolve in learning without being shy or not intrested and it gave me a very solid background to stand on and fight for my believes. it has been a plessure to have this workshop with Luke & Tim

    August 2 2010, Reflections
Mantle of the Expert for the first time in Palestine lead by Luke Abbott and Tim Tayler who are working with 35 Palestinian Kindergarten teachers for six continuous days. The first two days were rich and fruitful. I learned about the levels of the dramatic action and representation forms through two exciting stories, the Tiger in India and the Left out Baby. We managed together to build enquiry questions, do drama tasks, and work in imaginative MoE contexts. The second day, we learned about the conventions, which was quite challenging to me and to the rest of the teachers in terms of how to incorporate the expressive, iconic, and symbolic conventions. We worked together on the Hungry Caterpillar through which we applied the forms of representations, how to make children care about something and work as expert to solve a problem. The most interesting thing is that we co-constructed the story from a Palestinian socio-cultural context: A Palestinian farmer wearing the Palestinian Kofyeh dealing with the problem of the hungry caterpillar taking into consideration the environment and the water crises in Palestine. We learned how to plan, to build resources, and to exchange roles. It is interesting that the word resources was for me equipments, tools, films, and other technical materials, but now I added to my conceptual framework new kinds of resources; resources that are made from simple drawings, iconic and symbolic things, and also humans. In this day we also learned how to prepare for meaningful learning experiences with children using signifiers and connecting the context, while identifying the framework or the Point of views. We also worked on Jack and the Beanstalk story where we had to make difficult decisions and decide how to fix Jack’s mothers house with the small amount of money she offered. During this activity, we applied lots of conventions and used different forms of representations. By the end of the second day, we started to prepare for the big event: the “olive tree” as an MoE experience within the Palestinian context. We all are curious and looking forward for tomorrow’s meeting. Are we able to apply what we’ve learned so far? Can we use the conventions as a guide for building resources and planning for the event? Are we ready to open an opportunity for the children to imagine, ask questions, and live the experience? Let’s see…

It was from the early beginning of this workshop when i felt that it would make something different while the time passes i started to recognize the tremendous amount of learning and knowledge i started to gain . Lots of old concepts started to appear differently (imagine&pretend) learning is all about us and not me, we and not i , how important is planning for every single work and what is the important of the inessential step. But maybe the most important knowledge came out from my daughter’s mouth when she told me after she attended the olive tree activity: mama there was nothing wrong in what we were saying everything could be right adults were listening carefully to what we were saying and (we) came up with the solution, adults were playing, singing and dancing with us.I wish if my class at school could be the same.
Only at that time I recognized how much lecturing we make in our classes and how much space our children need and how could our judgments be frustrated to those children.
Finally ,it was one of the most valuable experiences of my life. Thanks a lot for Tim & Luke for giving me new strategies for learning,it was pleasure to work with you.

A very exciting experience with Luke & Tim, I’ve learned many things about MOE and Drama. New experience, a new way to use in the classroom with he children knowing how to imagine things with them. I also learned how to differenciate between inquiry, drama and MOE.
The Olive tree tasks gave me confidence that we an do it as teachers and we can succeed.
Personally, I’m working on doing my own project as soon as we get to school.
Thanx Luke, thanx Tim. We will always remeber what you did to all of us, how you were patient with us especially me and my endless questions.
    I thank you very much.
