Pieces of Dorothy

Written and directed by Roger Burgess, an ex-BBC producer who recorded a series of television lessons with Dorothy in the 1980s and 90s, this biographical documentary tells Dorothy Heathcote’s story, from Yorkshire mill girl weaving wartime parachutes to internationally renowned educational guru. It contains extracts from nine teaching videos recorded since 1971 by Newcastle University, where she worked as a lecturer in the School of Education from 1950 to 1986.

The video also asks fellow teachers to assess her talents, and features sequences shot at an international conference on her life and influence held at Lancaster University’s Department of Theatre Studies in July 1993.

Duration: 58 minutes
